Canine Good Citizen Certification Program

September 21, 2003

Canine Good Citizen ParticipantsThe Stonecliff Animal Clinic participated in the 1st Annual Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Certification Program at the hospital on September 21, 2003. Fifteen dogs were tested that day, and a large number of them passed and were awarded a CGC certificate. Of those dogs, our own Hazel Kelly, a 7yr. old Golden Retriever that many of you know from your visits to the clinic passed with flying colors. Three certified evaluators put the dogs and their owners through the paces, testing socialization skills, basic commands, and behavior during separation.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) started the CGC certification program in 1989 to reward dogs that have good manners at home and in their community. The program recognizes responsible pet ownership, and basic good manners. All dogs that pass the test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club and are recorded in the AKC Canine Good Citizen Archive.

To become a certified evaluator you must be registered with the AKC with the following criteria:

  1. Must have worked with owners and dogs in a professional or educational capacity for at least 1 year.
  2. Must have worked with a variety of breeds.

Veterinarians definitely recognize the benefits of a well-trained dog, and police and animal control officers use CGC programs when dealing with dog problems in many communities. Some insurance companies even give discounts to families with a CGC. member.

We hope to have another test day in the future and we will announce the date as plans become more definite. Everyone benefits from a CGC dog!
