The training room at SAC takes into consideration the comfort and safety of both dog and handler. The heated facility provides the opportunity to hold classes and continue training throughout the winter months. All levels of obedience classes are offered as well as beginning levels of agility training. The area is equipped with _ inch rubber stall mats to provide the best possible footing for dogs working in agility and at the higher levels of obedience. The room is also used for puppy kindergarten, puppy personality and aptitude testing, AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluations, and practice sessions for dogs and handlers active in competition. The training room is also an excellent venue for seminars and clinics.
Puppies must be at least 8 weeks of age and preferably no more then 14 weeks of age at the time of enrollment. The focus of Puppy K is primarily socialization and proper interaction of the young puppy with other dogs as well as learning the social skills to be a good pet. Some very basic obedience exercises are introduced to start the puppy on the road to further training.
This class is for dogs over 4 months of age. Handlers learn the techniques for teaching their dogs to be good citizens and will-mannered pets.
Prerequisite for this class is completion of a basic obedience class or a knowledge of the obedience behaviors of sit, down, stand, heel, stay and come. Practice continues on these behaviors in addition to the introduction of Òclicker trainingÓ, retrieving, and beginning jumping.
This class is for the serious obedience competitor and for those considering the sport of competition obedience. It requires that the dog have a thorough knowledge of obedience commands and be reliable off lead. The emphasis is on refining handler techniques, motivating the competition dog, and preparing the dog for more advanced levels.
These sessions are offered on a drop-in basis ($5.00 per session) and provide the dog/handler team with an opportunity to practice the obedience routines they will encounter at AKC obedience trials. Teams can practice all levels from pre-novice through utility. Please notify us in advance if you plan to attend a run-through session.
The AKC sponsors the Canine Good Citizen program to encourage every dog owner to train his or her dog to be well-behaved. A dog who passes the Canine Good Citizen Test has demonstrated that he can accept other people, other dogs and the distractions of every day life. This class prepares the dog and handler for the Canine Good Citizen Test which will be offered at the completion of the class sessions. The test is very informal and dogs are not expected to perform with precision as in obedience competition.
This class is for those who seriously intend to show their dogs in the conformation ring and would like to learn proper handling techniques. Exercises covered include stacking, free baiting, gaiting, and ring etiquette.
The focus of this class is an obstacle familiarization and performance for both the dog and the handler. Safe and gradual introduction to the various pieces of equipment is emphasized.
Dog and handler continue to refine their techniques with individual pieces of equipment, short sequences are introduced with increased emphasis on handler techniques.
More challenging sequences are presented in this class with focus on dog/handler communication and obstacle discrimination.
Offers a basic introduction to the sport of dog agility, with an emphasis on the building blocks that will be the foundation of all future agility training for the team.
Is a continuation of Beginning I. This class will continue to build on the basic skills, focusing on the dog's mastery of agility equipment as well as offering an introduction to handling skills. This is an ongoing class.
Is a class for dog/handler working at an Open level or better. This class will
focus on further developing the handler's skill and the team's ability as a whole.
Weave poles are required. This is an on-going class.
People and dogs of all ages are welcome. All winter classes are held at Stonecliff Animal Clinic in Bradford, Vermont.
