Surgery Slide Show: Beagle with two fractured front legs Right Radius Repaired The right radius was repaired using a series of pins driven into or through the bone and connected outside the leg with a connecting rod. This is called external fixation. A bone plate could not be used on these fractures because of the open fracture and contamination already present. Placing a bone plate (internal fixation) on this type of fracture would have resulted in a very high risk of infection. In the radiograph you can also see the left leg fixation, with the bone plate in place.
